Vertical Blinds are becoming more and more popular as people no longer just think of them as blinds that they would see an office or at the dentist.  The vast choice of materials, colours and patterns mean that there is something for all tastes.  Vertical Blinds are also very practible and are not dust collectors like venetian blinds.  Blackout Vertical Blinds are now very popular for bedrooms as they are a lot more effective than blackout roller blinds as the whole of the window is covered by the thermal blackout material, unlike blackout roller blinds where there is usaally a gap of an inch due to the mechanism.

One of the biggest advantages of vertical blinds is the ease and changing the slats.  Many companies now offer replacement vertical blind slats only, this means that of you have a perfectly good headrail then when you fancy a change you can buy the slats only.

Window blinds have become a very popular way of helping to decorate any room. They help to characterise, and bring together the whole colour scheme of a room. For the majority of people, the decorating of the window is the last thing they consider. And with careful consideration, the right type of blind can set the tone of the room and really help to finish it off.

Blinds allow the homeowner to control the amount of light that enters the room, shade and the amount of privacy they require. This is resulting in blinds being increasingly chosen as an alternative to curtains.

There are a wide variety of blinds now available on the market:

Roller Blinds are perfectly suited for any room in the house. And the many different styles and colours available help to provide that finishing touch to any room.
Blackout blinds are very popular especially with people with young children. They are ideal for the bedroom, and block out sunlight

Vertical blinds are a practical solution for blocking out sunlight as well as providing privacy. Their clean lines and modern look are especially suitable for patio doors, conservatory windows and offices. They also come in a wide range of colours and patterns. The slats can be pulled right back to the side to give a clear view from the window, or tilted at an angle to provide some privacy.

Venetian blinds are available in PVC, aluminium, wood effect and real wood. Each provide a unique and modern look to a room. The slats can be tilted to provide privacy and block out sunlight, or the slats can be pulled all the way up to allow sunlight to enter the room. This allows the homeowner to control the amount of sunlight and privacy.

What Blinds Where

It is said that windows are one of the most important aspects of a house and I must say I tend to agree. It always fascinates me that people spend a fortune purchasing their home and then they put old net curtains in their windows. For me the windows are one of the focal points of the whole house. It is what people notice from the outside and what guests tend to look at from within.
Putting a Venetian blind in the window does not have to be expensive, the cheapest can be bought for less than a fiver, and for less than £100 you could have a nice Venetian blind to control the light and allow privacy, a nice curtain pole above the recess and some stylish curtains hang around hold backs matching the curtain pole.
With regards to the bedrooms there is an absolute necessity, this is a blackout blind or curtains that have blackout curtain lining. If the room is overlooked and privacy is an issue then I always recommend installing a Venetian blind as well. As the last thing you want to do is pull the curtains when you are getting changed, and as the room is dark you will have to put the light on (not very energy efficient!!). With a Venetian blind in the window all you need to do is tilt it slightly to get total privacy. It doesn’t have to be an expensive blind; Woodgrain Venetian blinds do the same job as the more expensive Real Wooden Venetian blinds.
As for kitchens and bathrooms I always recommend a blind that can be easily maintained, and the perfect blinds for this is the PVC Venetian blinds, they can get totally soaked and will dry in no time, they are also very easy to maintain as they can be wiped clean really easily.
For conservatories there is only one option in my opinion and that is a vertical blind. How much you spend on these is up to you. You can purchase DIY vertical blind kits where you just trim them to size yourself. If you don’t want to do this then you can order them made to measure online and they come to your custom size, all you have to do is fit them, and to be honest vertical blinds are the easiest blinds to fit. The most expensive but less hassle way is to arrange for somebody to come and measure, supply and fit them for you. If you decide to go down his route then I would strongly recommend using a local blind business and not one of the “big boys” like Hillary’s Blinds, as they have a massive marketing spend which has to be paid for by somebody, and from experience whenever we have gone in to quote a job after Hillarys Blinds have been in, we have always come in at least 30% cheaper for exactly the same blinds, it is also good to support your local business.

All my above opinions are the absolute minimum requirements for window dressage, there is such a wide variety of blind out there, all in fantastic colours and styles, and you will find that over time you will change the look of your rooms simply be changing the blinds – easy and cost effective.

Venetian Blinds - Now and Then

Venetian blinds have been used for over two hundred years as a way to avoid excessive light and to keep nosy neighbours eyes out! Venetian blinds are thought to come from Italy, with the name Venetian originating from Venice. These used horizontal slats with pull cords to pull them up and down, then about 50 years later they introduced the device to tilt the slats, both principles are still used today.
The only big change in Venetian blinds is the materials and colours used. With advances in technology Venetian blinds now come in the form of PVC and Aluminium and now we even have perforated aluminium Venetian blinds which when closed have a stunning light effect on floors and walls, not really practical but it looks good!
One of the most popular Venetian blinds today is the Woodgrain Venetian Blinds. These are made of PVC but have a wood colouring in them, so you can have that expensive wood effect at a fraction of the price of real wood. These are particularly common in conservatories, as they are less likely to bow in the heat like what wooden Venetian blind tend to do.
The newest type of Venetian blind on the block has to be the Faux Leather, these come in two main colours – black and dark chocolate.

The most common blind is still the Natural Real Wooden Venetian Blind, these are now available in many different colours including teak, honey, white and walnut to name but a few. These are also available in many different types of wood from all over the world including Canadian Maple, Birch an oak. People are now also changing the slat sizes that they want, traditionally it was the 25mm that everybody wanted, now more and more people are going for the 35mm and 50mm.
